Due to the fact that our Club is north facing, the views from our deck overlooking the bay and the Outeniqua Mountains are breathtakingly beautiful. The weather in Mossel Bay is claimed to be the second mildest in the world with only Hawaii reportedly experiencing more sun shine days than us. The MBYBC is the heart of the water sport fraternity, and caters for the sailing, boating, diving and sea kayaking fraternity. The MBYBC has an excellent sailing school which caters for the upliftment of the Town’s youth who would like to take part in this sport. The best slipway in the Garden Route area for the boating and fishing community. The kayaking section experience some incredible sightings of Southern Right whales in winter and year round and they have encounters with dolphins, seals and the occasional turtle. The Café on the Bay Restaurant which caters for members as well as visiting yachtsmen, as well as functions, parties and weddings. First class braai & lapa facilities for the members and visiting yachtsmen. Every Wednesday evening Bingo is played and on Friday evenings the majority of the members hold their main social event where live music and lucky draws take place at the MBYBC. Our aim is to promote sport in all the different disciplines and at the same time to do it in an environmentally friendly manner so that we can pass on a legacy of sportsmanship, friendship and a love of the environment to our future generations and to grow our club from strength to strength. The month of April was very busy with a number of events taking place at the club and on the waters of the Bay. Weather conditions were mostly favourable and great sailing was had by all who ventured out to enjoy the last of the summer weather. This season has had the cloud of the lease hanging over it but in spite of this we have had an amazing season. The security and member’s access worked very well this year with the introduction of a private security company to monitor the gates, members were treated to a well-controlled club. This fun racing is a great way to introduce new people to sailing. Jumailone Meyer, started sailing three years ago as one of the development sailors. He was a Sea Cadet who in order to be promoted to able seaman took up sailing, a requirement. Jumailone, comes out of a poor community where many of the young people are involved with crime and take drugs. He started sailing on Tuesdays and then he went on to the high-performance class. He has successfully taken part in regattas where he has done well. Coming from a family of six his mother always told him to find something to do to keep himself busy. With winds from 15 knots and pretty gusty, no amount of beer could prepare the crew of Parental Guidance and Therese for the rather interesting race ahead. Normally being the boat to beat the pressure was on. The Holiday Season is upon us and a very busy time lies ahead for us all. Our patience is going to be sorely tried and tested. Fortunately, our Personnel have great potential and we know they will rise with ease to the occasion and once the holiday season is over we can all still look each other in the eye with pride. This is a bit of a challenge, as it is so different for our pupils compared to swimming in a pool. We will be stopping the lessons from now until the end of the festive season. It was the first true ocean race ever held in South Africa. Since then the race has run various variations of the course.
